Semi-Charmed Life

Out with the old, in with the new

I'm not really quite sure what it was that inspired me to buy my own domain name, so I'll guess I'll attribute it to the new year. As it's customary to ring in the new year by writing a recap about how good or shitty your old one was, I guess I'll do just that.

2008 was a very good year for me. I say this despite being unemployed for a third of the year (and still am, regrettably) because, like my friend jigg said, it wasn't a good year for me because everything went my way. It was a good year because it really was a memorable year for me. I went out and did nearly everything I said I wanted to do. Snowboarding, brazilian jiu-jitsu, boxing and a vacation to California.

2008 was about personal fulfillment. I indulged in many fun activities, but I have to set some new goals for 2009. The most important one on that list is my career. Because my first two positions have not been long term, I feel like the path to my career has not even begun. I'm not sure if I'm even on the right track, but this year feels like a decisive year. I hope by the end of the year, I will have a clearer vision of what I want to be doing for the rest of my life. I know it'll take more than hope though.

Aside from that, what I really want to focus on in the short term is photography. I've been disgustingly lazy with my camera, which is a sin considering how much I've invested in the damn thing. In the next few weeks I want to start giving myself little projects to work on. I really have to motivate myself to start snapping away. Just wishingI was better at photography won't do much for me. I have to put in the time. I think I'm going to start with my old neighborhoods and the areas where I grew up.

  1. Hey Alvin,

I was worried for a sec that “Goodbye Xanga” meant that you weren’t going to write anymore! You’re one of the most profound writers I know (around our age.)

    Keep at it. :)

  2. nice! i get to keep reading when i’m bored at work.

  3. yay! i always enjoy reading your blog.

  4. Slinging an SLR camera around in OP?…i hesitate at that haha…did u forget how it was like here?

  5. Kudos to the new blog. I suggest not pursuing a career in finance which is what you seem to be doing. Figure out your strengths (hint hint…WRITING) and start there. Even though it may be rough in the beginning, it’s more fulfilling.
