Trivial Ranting

I know this is really trivial, but it really bothers me when I see people list one of their hobbies or interests as "loves to do anything that's fun." Wow I had no idea there are people that go out of their way to do things that are boring. "Anything fun" . . . really? Me too! Same deal with "love to listen to any music that's good." Good thing you told me because before I thought you only listened to shitty music. Glad you cleared that up. "Spontaneous" is another cute little word that people, and girls especially, love to throw around. I can't put my finger on why, but that word just annoys the hell out of me.

What the heck is up with these stupid forms online that ask you for your home phone number? I think the last time someone called my home phone to ask for me was over 10 years ago. If you're a website designer and you're reading this, please don't make "home phone" a required field. I have a cell phone precisely because I think calling my cell phone would be the best way to reach me.

And on a related note, DON'T tell me how to make up my passwords.

Think what you will about our wonderful NYC subway system, but it is still probably THE best subway system in the world. Yes, I say this in spite of my limited travel experience because I am that confident that it is. It may be dirty and it may be crowded, but it gets you EVERYWHERE.

Why do clementines have to come so small? I can never eat just one. It's very tempting to just pop the whole thing in my mouth, but it's ironic that the reason I think they are so good is because they come in small little pieces, so that popping the whole thing (or half of it) in my mouth would make it not taste as good. And they make my fingers all orange.

Weekend Trip to Boston

Ugh. I just spent close to an hour trying to figure out what flickr plugin to install for my blog. I wanted to install slickr, which actually looks really damn good but I couldn't get it to work properly. So instead, I had to settle for Flickr Photo Album, which is ugly as hell but I guess it'll have to do for now.

So anyway, below are some pictures from this weekend. I shot about 450 pictures and only came away with 65 that I'm satisfied with. Click on any of the pictures to go to my flickr album, or just click here.

It was a very fun trip, although my overall impression of Boston was that it was not very impressive. I wish I had more time to really soak in the history, but since we only stayed for 3 days, it was a very superficial view of the city. I wasn't impressed with the food we ate, but it could just be that we ate at mediocre restaurants. Most of the time I was running around Boston with a  70-200mm lens, with the exception of the aquarium where I used a 10-22mm. And when I say "running around," I literally mean running around. Some shots are just really difficult to take with a 70-200, which forced me to run really far back in order to take the shot. My friends who weren't taking pictures were also leading the way, so I spent most of the time snapping away and running to try and catch up with them.

Good trip, good times.

Bathroom Humor

I used to think that the best part about coming home after being out of town would be to sleep in your own bed, but I realized the best part is actually being able to shit in your own bathroom on your own toilet. You know how it gets when you really have to pee and you're holding it in til you get home? As you get closer to home, peeing becomes more and more urgent until finally when you're mere steps away from the bathroom it feels like the pipes are about to burst. Well, something similar happens to me during weekend getaways.

I'm not sure why, but it's like my bowel movement completely shuts off when I'm away from home. This past weekend I went to Boston and not once did I do my thing on the throne. Instead my body tucks it away inside me somewhere and what results from this is me producing some of the foulest, most noxious flatulence you have ever smelled in your life.

Anyway, so on the way back it's like my body knew it was approaching home. As I got closer and closer, all the great stuff I had this weekend started throwing a party in my stomach. Odd how Mt. Shitmore was dormant all weekend long and decided to erupt once I came back to NYC.

Just Do It

I was talking to a friend and telling him how I wish I was able to appreciate fine art. He told me that once he started taking art classes, he realized what skill it took to do things such as being able to blend the right colors and what not. He said after trying to paint his own paintings, he had a finer appreciation for the subtle intracies of art that never occurred to him before.

Although it never ocurred to me to try painting in order to develop a better sense of appreciation for fine art, I've always felt that a person never fully develops an appreciation for something until he gets his hands dirty in it. One of the reasons why I decided to jump in and give brazilian jiu-jitsu and boxing a try was because I was really into mma at the time. I didn't want to be just like every other idiot fanboy on youtube or those mma forums who talked like they knew it all though, so I figured what better way to learn than to do. I'm not so much into the mma scene anymore though, with the exception of a handful of fighters whose careers I follow. After I started training, I realized how ignorant most people sounded when they talked about the sport.

In other things such as football and photography, I would never have appreciated either if I had not started doing it. I never understood what football was about and always thought it was a confusing mass of men on a playing field whenever I saw it on television. I had a friend in college who was patient enough to teach me the basics of the game, such as catching (which I still suck at), tackling, angle of pursuit, what to do on offensive and defensive line, etc. I'm not a football fanatic, but I do enjoy playing now as well as watching, although I doubt I'll ever care for professional football as much as some of my friends do. Following the season is too much work, and even moreso if you have a fantasy league. Not my idea of fun, but at least I can appreciate a beautiful diving one handed catch or a hard hitting helmet ripping tackle.

As for photography, I don't think I've ever had an appreciation for a good photograph until I started getting into it as a hobby (although I'm a very lazy hobbyist). I began to develop an eye for what a good picture looked like to me, and began to appreciate good photography, which is a mix of patience, creativity, and trial and error. This has made facebook a lot harder to deal with because it becomes obvious that 99% of people taking pictures haphazardly point their camera and snap without ever giving a thought to how a simple change in angle or  perhaps shifting over a few spots to the right or left would create a much more pleasing picture. The ubiquity of the digital camera has turned the art of photography into something mundane and probably regarded as an after-thought.

Just like I wrote in the sidebar: "Life is not a spectator sport." All the reading and watching in the world will only amount to so much. Nothing compares to the actual experience of doing something. So who knows? One day I might take a stab at painting. Fine art still eludes me, but then again so do many other things. I can't appreciate jazz no matter how much I've tried and I'd be hard-pressed to tell you if a wine I had was good, although if I had an inkling that you spent a pretty penny on it I'd be inclined to tell you it was good.

The Cat and the Toothbrush

Not much to post about. Went to Central Park this past weekend to shoot some pictures at the zoo but I failed miserably. Nothing came out good. I'm going to Boston this coming weekend though, so I hope I take some great shots there. Anyway, I'll leave you with this video. This video had me laughing for 4 minutes straight. Very cute. And I'm not even a cat person . . .

At 3:00 I was hysterical.
